The Whitsundays, like the entire top portion of Australia, has only two
seasons - a wet season (October to April) and a dry season (May to
September). Day time
temperatures are around 25 to 30 deg C (77 to 86 deg F),
with water temperatures about 27 deg C (81 deg F). This is the
tropics so it can be quite humid - being able to leap into the water to cool off easily
is certainly a great advantage of being on a boat!
Wind patterns are characterised by reliable south-easterly trades usually
blowing at 15 to 20 knots - ideal sailing conditions for our catamaran!
Navigation is a lot trickier than the "Med" - anyone wanting to
learn how to do the "real thing", this is the ideal place to learn!
The distances between islands are not great - to the extent that we will be
able often to sail an hour or two in the morning, anchor for
lunch/swim/snorkel/explore for a few hours, then sail onto somewhere else in
the afternoon.
