Fethiye
Fethiye - a lively town on SeaScape's Turkish sailing routes.

As you'd guess from the name—Fethiye is the Big Town in the extensive Bay of Fethiye—not that this makes it any great metropolis! :)

Built on the site of the ancient Telmessus, it's now a modern-looking port; much of it was devastated in the 1950s earthquakes and since re-built. There are still many reminders of ancient times scattered around, however—cliff tombs overlooking the town (yes, you can go climb 'em!), and right in the middle of all the present-day traffic—a huge amphitheatre which has been restored and now used for modern-day plays and entertainment.

Fethiye is a great place to go shop!—dozens of fascinating little stores and stalls in the winding bazaar streets. Great bargain to be had in leather and carpets; beautiful handmade jewelry. A somewhat dangerous spot for those "Born to Shop". . .yes, many of the little stores will take plastic these days. . .:)

Lining the waterfront are the traditional wooden gulets (motor-sailors) and numerous bars and tavernas. It's a wonderful place to go promenade in the evening and take in the more modern-day, cosmopolitan Turkish ambiance. And of course, one should not miss an essential and highly traditional Turkish experience—Fethiye has a wonderful haman (Turkish bath & massage)—great for prolonging that beautiful golden tan you'll be getting!
